Gen. McChrystal Invited to Breakfast with the President

As we speak, Gen. Stanley McChrystal is RUSHING back to Washington, D.C. to have breakfast with President Obama.  The menu?  The President will chew ass.  The General will chew fingernails.

Don’t be fooled by the media coverage of this brouhaha.  This is not a story of a general who spoke out of turn, crossed the line, and now must either resign or be relieved from duty.  This is the story of a general who didn’t get his way, doesn’t want to be seen as a “quitter”, and did what he did KNOWING that he’d get called onto the carpet so that if our efforts in Afghanistan go belly-up, HE won’t get the blame.

I’m waiting to hear what the right wing take on this will be.  I imagine a lot of it will be critical of Obama… as it always is.  The right wing will say that Obama is ignoring the generals, and the generals are there to FIGHT the war so THEY should decide the policy.

These people seem to only be able to quote the parts of the Constitution that they like.  Here’s the part they will ignore today.

Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution states that Congress shall have the power “to raise and support Armies …” and “to provide and maintain a Navy.” In addition, Congress must provide for the state militias when they are called to federal service.

Article II, Section 2 states, “The President shall be the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States when called into the actual Service of the United States.”

When a general has a fundamental disagreement with the policy set by the President, the honorable thing to do is resign.  Then, the former general is free to speak his mind.  To weasel and back-bite and call “the real enemy, the wimps in the White House” is a clear violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice — and violates the rule of civilian control.

McChrystal deserves this breakfast with President Obama.  He also deserves to have a star or two removed from his shoulder by court-martial.

UPDATE: MSNBC reports Afghan President Karazai supports McChrystal.  So, what do you say we just get the hell out of there and let the Taliban put Karazai’s head on a spike?  Then we can carpet bomb the entire country from afar, not lose another soldier, and mine all that gold and stuff for ourselves?
