Epic Teabagger Tax Quiz Fail!
An excellent friend of mine pointed me toward an article in Forbes written by Bruce Bartlett. I invite you to read it for yourself so you can see that when you take a Teabagger and wash away that outer layer of racism, scrape off that thick, scaly hide of Limbaugh/Beck/Hannity-induced fear, what you’re left with is a core of dumbassery.
To quote the writer, “For an antitax group, they sure don’t know much about taxes.”
At the recent Teabagger rally in DC, the Baggers were asked a series of questions. Let’s see how well YOU do!
1. How much the does the federal government get in taxes as a percentage of the gross domestic product.
A. A Million Jillion Percent
B. Depending on which CBO calculations you adopt, either 6.4% or 12.7% or 14.8%
C. 42% of my gol-durned hard earned money what gets spent on foreigners and minorities.
The correct answer is B. According to the article…
Tuesday’s Tea Party crowd, however, thought that federal taxes were almost three times as high as they actually are. The average response was 42% of GDP and the median 40%. The highest figure recorded in all of American history was half those figures: 20.9% at the peak of World War II in 1944.
Wow. They were WAY off!
2. How much federal income tax will a family making $50,000 have to pay?
A. $8,694 if single, $6,669 if married.
B. An Arm and a Leg.
C. Anywhar from $10,000 to $12,740!
The correct answer is A. According to the article…
These numbers are high because to have a taxable income of $50,000, one’s gross income would be higher by at least the personal exemption, which is $3,650, and the standard deduction, which is $5,700 for single people and $11,400 for married couples. Owning a home or having children would reduce one’s tax burden further.
All you gotta do is take a look at your W-2 at the end of the year. Of course, a lot of these Teabaggers are retired, on disability or otherwise unoccupied and on the federal and state dole. So they wouldn’t know, I guess…
3. Has President Obama raised the federal income tax?
A. No, because he ain’t no legal president bein’ an Indo-Kenyan from Canada with dual British citizenship!
B. No, because federal taxes are CONSIDERABLY lower than they were before Jan. 20, 2009.
C. Yes, because Obama needed to raise taxes to pay for his ACORN buddies and William Ayers to plot against our freedoms!
The correct answer is B. Again, from the article.
In fact, 40% of Obama’s stimulus package involved tax cuts. These include the Making Work Pay Credit, which reduces federal taxes for all taxpayers with incomes below $75,000 by between $400 and $800.
According to the JCT, last year’s $787 billion stimulus bill, enacted with no Republican support, reduced federal taxes by almost $100 billion in 2009 and another $222 billion this year. The Tax Policy Center, a private research group, estimates that close to 90% of all taxpayers got a tax cut last year and almost 100% of those in the $50,000 income range. For those making between $40,000 and $50,000, the average tax cut was $472; for those making between $50,000 and $75,000, the tax cut averaged $522. No taxpayer anywhere in the country had his or her taxes increased as a consequence of Obama’s policies.
Of course, these hard and fast and provable facts will be shouted down by the Teabaggers as being lies told by the lefties in Washington who have their hands in our pockets up to their friggin’ ELBOWS, and BESIDES… you know how “those people” are predisposed genetically to lie!
Mr. Bartlett sees bad days ahead for the Teabaggers.
Whatever the future of the Tea Party movement in American politics, it’s a bad idea for so many participants to operate on the basis of false notions about the burden of federal taxation. It only takes a little bit of time to look at one’s tax return to see what one is actually paying the Treasury, calculate the percentage of one’s income that goes to taxes, and compare it with what was paid last year and the year before. People may then discover that their anger is misplaced and channel it into areas where it is more likely to bring about positive change.
Personally, I feel that is far too kind and optimistic, given the racist and homophobic hooting, hollering and spitting done at elected officials this last weekend, with GOP members on the House floor actually cheerleading — FROM THE FLOOR — the raucous behavior of this monster they have created.
Of course, as anyone who subscribed to “Famous Monsters of Filmland” when he was a kid can tell you — monsters are notoriously hard to control. This particular monster, unhappy with the pace of “taking our country back” and no longer trusting the GOP, will likely run their OWN candidates in many races later this year. And WHO will they take votes from?
Not the Democrats.
But hey, it’s your monster. You made it. You deal with the results, Dr. Frankenstein!
Good luck getting it back into the crypt when you’re done with it.
